Carolyn Litzell
In late 2020, Carolyn passed her GED with flying colors and enrolled in a College Readiness class at the Hubbs Center, where she demonstrated a quickness to learn and proficiency in college readiness standards. In January, she began attending St. Paul College and maintained a high GPA despite her busy schedule. Carolyn's dream since the third grade is to become a high school English teacher and see her community flourish as bright young adults graduate from high school. She has already gained some teaching experience by working with the East Side Learning Center and as a freelance tutor, which has reinforced her desire to help students reach their full potential.
Tong Yang
Tong was born in Xiengkhouang, Laos, and came to Minnesota in 2019. Soon after, she came to Hubbs to pursue her education and her dream of becoming proficient in English. After enrolling, Tong advanced quickly through the ELL and College Readiness programs and displayed keen problem-solving skills, a commitment to learning, and a sense of caring for her community through volunteer work at RAP Head Start. Tong plans to attend St. Paul College for 2 years and then transfer to Metropolitan State University to become a school teacher. In the long-term, she would like to start a non-profit daycare and tutoring center for ESL children and sponsor a study-abroad program in Laos.
Mohit Kumar
Mohit grew up on a farm in Northern India and came to the United States in 2019. He first came to San Francisco and was a chef at a Michelin-star restaurant and moved to Minnesota a year later. In his classes at Hubbs, Mohit demonstrated a strong capacity for listening, analyzing, and communicating. Something he is very passionate about is promoting sustainable living and resilience in climate change. He plans to attend Metropolitan State University, where he will take one more year of classes to complete his three-year degree from India and receive a Bachelor's degree in marketing. Mohit's goal is to combine his business skills and environmental values to contribute to the sustainability of our planet. He later hopes to also pursue an MBA.
Selena Rivera
Selena received her GED and subsequently began taking a nursing assistant course at the Hubbs Center. When she successfully completed that class, she enrolled at St. Paul College to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Throughout her time at Hubbs, it was clear that Selena was one of those students who never gave up and would work past the obstacles to achieving her goals. Her supportive and encouraging attitude made her a wonderful addition to her classes and she continually worked hard at everything she did. Selena's dream is to become a registered nurse and serve her community by working at a hospital where so much help is needed at this time.
